Adaptation Syndrome | Painting in Contemporary Image Culture

Dinah Ryan

A contributing editor for Art Papers Magazine since 1992, her essays and reviews about contemporary visual art and culture appear frequently in Art Papers , Sculpture , Fiberarts , and other periodicals. In recent articles, she has examined contemporary Gothicism, the relationship between visual art and science, and the idea of domesticity in contemporary art. Also a fiction writer, she received her MFA from the University of Virginia in 1997.

Ryan is a professor of English at Principia College in Elsa, Illinois, where she recently established a degree program in Creative Writing. Prior to joining the faculty of Principia and beginning a long commute between Illinois and her home in Staunton, Virginia, she was an assistant professsor of Art and English at Mary Baldwin College.

Since 1983, his paintings have been featured in solo and group exhibitions at a variety of venues, including Reynolds Gallery in Richmond, Virginia, Hartell Gallery at Cornell University, 1708 Gallery in Richmond, Holden Gallery at Warren Wilson College in Ashville, North Carolina, the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond, the Armory Gallery at Virginia Tech, the Fine Arts Building Gallery at Virginia Commonwealth University, the Crandall Gallery at Mount Union College in Alliance, Ohio, and the Contemporary Art Center at Virginia Beach.

Paul Ryan’s paintings and drawings are in numerous public and private collections. He is also an art critic and since 1990 has been a contributing editor for Art Papers Magazine. He is currently the director of Mary Baldwin College's Hunt Gallery. He earned a BA in English from Principia College, and an MFA in painting and drawing from The School of the Arts at Virginia Commonwealth University. He is a professsor of Art at Mary Baldwin College.
