The Bhagavad Gita (Chapter 1)

Charles Martin’s most recent book of poems, Starting from Sleep: New and Selected Poems (Overlook Press, 2002), was a finalist for the 2003 Lenore Marshall Award, and his verse translation of the Metamorphoses of Ovid (W.W.Norton, 2004) received the Harold Morton Landon Award. His other works include What The Darkness Proposes (1996), Steal The Bacon (1987), and a translation, The Poems of Catullus (1989), all published by the Johns Hopkins University Press. Martin’s poems have also appeared in numerous journals, including Poetry , The New Yorker , The Hudson Review , Boulevard , and The Threepenny Review . Martin is the recipient of a Bess Hokin Award, a Pushcart Prize, and fellowships from the Ingram Merrill Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts, and he served as Poet in Residence at The Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York from 2005 to 2009. His new collection, Signs & Wonders, is forthcoming from Johns Hopkins University in 2011.
