Mary Antin

Mary Antin (1881–1949) was an American writer and activist. Born in Russia in what is now Belarus, Antin emigrated with her family as a child. This was documented, along with her assimilation and education in America, in her autobiography The Promised Land (Houghton Mifflin, 1912). She became a lecturer on her immigrant experience and an immigration rights activist. Her other works include They Who Knock at Our Gates: A Complete Gospel of Immigration (Houghton Mifflin, 1914) and From Plotzk to Boston (W.B. Clarke, 1899), which laid the groundwork for The Promised Land .
